First of all i should say a big thanks to Lakshmi of
Veggie Cuisine for giving this opportunity for hosting Rci which is well know as Regional Cuisine of India, i have choose kongunadu cuisine as theme..The name Kongunadu originated from the term "Kongu", meaning nectar or honey. The old kingdom of Kongunad ruled by the entire major dynasties - Chera, Chola, Pandya and even Mughals at one stage extended from Ooty to Pollachi, Udumalpet to Ottanchatram, Karur to Tiruppur and Salem to Erode. Surrounded by mountains, Kongunadu was able to maintain its identity and cuisine over time. Blessed with Bhavani, Noyyal Amaravathi and Cauvery rivers, Kongunadu cuisine reflects the richness of its land...Kongunadu was blessed with enormous wealth, a pleasant climate and distinct features. The erstwhile kingdom of the Chera, Chola, Pandya, Hoysala, invading Muslim rulers and finally the British gave to South Indian cuisine, a line up of hallmark delicacies like Pongal, VenPongal, Kalkandu Pongal, Ravadosa, Kootu, Ellu Urundai, Ezhanir Payasam, Pathanir Halwa,Arusi Paruppu Sadham,Santhavai ( Idiyappam), Kollu Masiyal, Parrupu Urundai Kuzhambu....Use of coconut shell as a meat tenderizer, use of drumstick leaves to clarify ghee and Panchamirtham are some of Kongunadu’s culinary innovations.
Dating back to the 8th century the Kongu's have been recognised as the first people in South India to extract ghee from butter, jaggery from sugarcane juice and make copra from coconuts. As like chettinad cuisine, kongunadu cuisine also have their own traditional dishes..here is the map of kongu nadu if u never heard or havent seen earlier..
